MMA Fight at North Middle School “A Smash Hit”

ufadsc_0017Bunny Hawkersmith, owner of Bunny’s MMA and president of the United Fighters Alliance who promoted the MMA Mixed Martial Arts event at North Middle School in Decherd on Saturday night, Nov. 7, said the event was a “smash hit.”

“We had a full crowd of people that were more than satisfied,” Hawkersmith said. “Everyone was congratulating me on how well organized and professionally run the show was. I’ve had call after call and people coming up to me everywhere I go, wanting to know when the next event is to be held. I am so pleased how well the show went.

People from all over the nation, as far away as California, competed. One competitor was an NFL football player with the Redskins, and Ray Mercer of the Boston Celtics was sitting in the crowd as well as the other five stars that were on the special guest appearance list.

Hawkersmith also said this event has led to other competitions for his fighters.

A promoter from Illinois, who promotes fights for Harrah’s casinos in Las Vegas asked Hawkersmith about adding one of his fighters to his Vegas fight card at the beginning of the year.

“I was flattered to get such an offer,” Hawkersmith said. “[The promoter] said our fighters were very professional, and he was really impressed for a show in such a small town to be as good as the other shows he has attended. I give all the credit to the vendors, photographers and video crews, my fighters, our sponsors, volunteers and the people of this county who came out and supported this event to make it a smash hit.”

Hawkersmith said due to the success of Saturday’s event he plans on hosting another fight sometime in the near future.

BATTLE OF THE BORO

It only took one round for four local MMA fighters to knock out their opponents in front of a sellout crowd at the recent “Battle of the ‘Boro” held at Murfreesboro’s Boy’s and Girl’s Club.

There, fighters Monty Burks, Jordan Bucher, Timothy Stewart and Andrew Owens took on opponents from as far away as Ohio to as close as the town that hosted the event.

With rounds lasting three minutes in these bouts, the Franklin County crowd never got to hear that first round “ding.”

Bunny Hawkersmith, owner and instructor of Bunny’s Gym, said the fight was certainly a spectacle.

“We had a huge following from Franklin County to root us on,” Hawkersmith said. “When our fighters were announced the crowd literally rose to its feet.”

Hawkersmith said the size of the crowd is significant because it shows how fast MMA in Franklin County has grown. Read the rest of this entry »

(Elizabethtown, KY) – After putting on an exciting night of fights in front of the largest crowd in Hardrock MMA history at Hardrock MMA 12: Night of Champions, Hardrock MMA will make history again as it hosts the first women’s professional MMA fight in Kentucky at Hardrock MMA 13: The Girls Are Back.

The main event will feature a rematch between Hardrock MMA promoter and professional fighter Vanessa Bohleber-Higdon vs. Heather Corder. The pair’s first match, as amateurs, ended with Vanessa scoring a win via referee stoppage due to ground and pound just 32 seconds into the first round.

Featured on the women’s MMA reality series Fight Life, and training under Josh Johnson out of Etown BJJ and Judo, Bohleber-Higdon pulls double duty as both a promoter and professional fighter. “It’s nice to be in the first women’s professional fight in Kentucky,” said Bohleber-Higdon. “I think it’s great we’re hosting the first women’s professional fight. We’ve had a lot of pro fights on our cards lately and it puts us above the average promotion that puts on amateur fights here and there. I’m not taking Heather lightly. I’m prepared for anything, and even though I won the first one early, I’m not taking her lightly because it could go any way.”

Sponsored by Heart Fight Gear, Heather Corder is looking forward to the rematch. “I think it’s great being part of the first women’s pro fight in Kentucky,” said Corder. “I think if you have the chance, everybody should do it [fight MMA]. Women are just as tough as men. I like Vanessa, but once we get in the cage it’s a different story. I have been hitting the gym everyday, twice a day, and my game has tightened up a lot.” Read the rest of this entry »
